Not officially, but chosen by the gay travelers, Chihuahua ( Punta Ballenas ) is the gay beach destination in Uruguay and Punta del Este. If you want to mingle with the local and international gay summer gay crowd. this is with no doubt the place to do so. Located a few miles from the centre of town, Chihuahua boasts miles of fine sand and beautiful freshwater lagoons, and attracts thousands of sun-worshippers during its short summer season. You’ll almost certainly be treated to one of its amazingly photogenic sunsets.

Drive north to José Ignacio, a former pirate’s hideaway, discreetly located between dusty roads and white sand beaches, and you’ll be treated to some breathtaking scenery, with beautiful lagoons and gentle, undulating hills that sweep down to the coast. Citrus Cafe is the perfect spot to relax and look for some shade after a long day at the beach, right before you plan your way back to Punta del Este. My favorite stop for a nice tea with crepes. Also in Jose Ignacio, right on the beach with beautiful panoramic views of the beach and the Jose Ignacio’s Light House. The place to be and be seen. Great for breakfast, lunch (if you are lucky enough to get a table) and where some of the best night parties of Punta del Este take place. CM • 08 FORKS

Aside from being my favorite hotel in Punta del Este, 100% Gay Friendly and avant-garde, it offers the best combination of beach, views and gourmet, to me, in Punta del Este. An infinit black pool with a huge Budha at the end.... and a great local/international/ asian menu fusion. Seat at the wood deck over the beach, have a drink or taste the local Tannat wine.
