Castle Hotel & Spa in Tarrytown | New York, United States | Last Sunday, I left Manhattan for a relaxing one-night-getaway in full style, only 30 minutes. My castle for a night at Tarrytown, in Westchester, Hudson Valley. Yes you read right, there are castles in New York, where you can explore and stay at. A world-class destination for relaxing and romantic getaways with superb cuisine. Member of the Historic Hotels of America and the Small Luxury Hotels Collection. The castle was taken over three years ago by the Japanese group Sankara.
Castle Hotel and Spa, in a style reminiscent of Norman fortification in Wales, sits majestically atop one of the highest points in Westchester County overlooking the Hudson River amid sprawling acres of manicured gardens and grounds. With over 100 years of history, the Castle is undoubtedly a sumptuous escape to the enchanted era of America’s Gilded Age.
The story of the Castle begins shortly before the turn of the 20th century, when General Howard Carroll, a well-respected newspaperman, playwright and businessman, purchased the land as a home for his growing family. General and Mrs. Carroll were notable social figures in Westchester County and New York City society. They entertained frequently and on a grand scale resplendent in the tasteful luxuries of the era.
We arrived from Grand Central Terminal, New York, by the Metro North Train to Tarrytown Station. A 30 minutes train ride, with quite lovely panoramic views of the Hudson River. Once in town we walked for an hour, exploring and browsing by all the local Antique Shops. After that a quick lunch at Sea Grass Restaurant ( where I strongly recommend trying the Crab Egg Benedict along with their signature Bloody Mary. After that a car picked as up and in less than 10 minutes rushed us into the Castle, to first relax and enjoy the Thann Sanctuary Spa and Fitness Center. THANN™ Sanctuary Spas are known throughout Asia as an oasis of peace and tranquility offering a wide variety of luxurious spa treatments based on THANN’s art of natural therapy.
I checked in at my room, took a shower and got ready to meet the rest of the group for some Filthy Vodka Martinis at The General’s Bar and Tapestry Lounge, great places to relax, socialize and enjoy your favorite libation. Followed by a full site inspection of the property.
Castle Hotel & Spa features 31 newly renovated and refurbished guest rooms and suites reflecting a renewed luxury and sophistication. Guest rooms feature Tivoli Radio & Bose Sound systems, complementary Wi-Fi access, goose down bed spreads, and some suites offer wood-burning fireplaces. Castle Hotel & Spa is a smoke-free environment since 1998.Despite the renovations, the hotel still keeps it castle ambiance. My room was quite large, located in Carrollcliffe, the newest wing of the Castle with one king-size bed or two queen-size beds, overlooking the gardens. I would have love to see some more refinement on my Deluxe Room. I was not particularly impressed by the was the bathroom amenities were presented, nor the laundry bags, shoe polisher among other room amenities, which we not in a very castle worth it style.
But if you want to enjoy the full castle experience, then you will have to book one of their suites, which BTW are quite lovely.
After our exhaustive site inspection, which included all ballrooms and common areas, we proceeded for dinner at Equus Restaurant.
With breathtaking ambiance, stunning interior design and award-winning cuisine, Equus is the Zagat-rated winner of Five Stars by The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. Equus features unique and creative Auberge-style natural French cuisine by a Japanese Chef based on locally sourced ingredients presented with innovative seasonal menus. A distinctive gourmet experience is consistently presented in three unique dining rooms, rich in distinct character, decor and atmosphere. Dining options include our celebrated seasonal Prix Fixe Tasting Menus and the carefully designed a la Carte offerings.
The Oak Room, with its rich wood panel accoutrements first owned by Louis XIV, was brought intact to New York when the Castle was first built a century ago and the popular Library features rich Mahogany bookcases and a dramatic paneled ceiling in Neo-Classical style which adds to the room’s old-world beauty and charm.
Following morning I woke up to enjoy a lovely gourmet breakfast at The Garden Room, with exquisite views of the lush gardens, the historic Hudson River Valley, and the majestic Manhattan skyline. Followed by an hour and a half workout session at their fitness center.
By 11AM was ready for check out. A car picked me up, to take me to Tarrytown Station, and by 1PM I was at my home back in Manhattan. A perfect weekend getaway. I strongly recommend it for romantic escapes, anniversaries, birthday celebrations, family or friends reunions, and of course weddings. Carlos Melia Luxury Travel Curator – www.carlosmelia.com
