Hartwell House Hotel, Restaurant and Spa  |  Vale of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, UK  |  Just and hour away by train from London, find this stunning restored 18th. century historic home, member of the National Trust of Britain and featured property of Pride of Britain Hotels. Either for a romantic and classic overnight stay or just to spend the day walking around their vast 90 acres of green fields in the Vale of Aylesbury and having a traditional British Tea, same as exiled King Louis XVIII of France use to do with his Queen Marie-Josephine de Savoie. Just as you arrive and enter passing the tall green trees, stone walls, the old church, the spa… and there it is the main house, your jaw just drops. An stunning manor, surrounded by lakes, ponds, and over 90 acres of green fields with cattle roaming free. You are immediately transported to the 18th century, and you have not yet step into the house.

The garden was laid out, at the start of the 18th century, in the formal style with allées and garden buildings: temples, columns, an obelisk, garden statuary, canals and an amazing yew tree exedra. The designer was probably James Gibbs, who certainly designed the garden buildings, several of which are extant.

There are thirty bedrooms and suites on three floors in the main house, each aimed at ensuring your comfort and enjoyment during your stay. The video above was my suite, styled and fit to please a King or in my case I should say a Queen. Literally, this room #12 was the official room of Queen Marie-Josephine de Savoie. In addition, there are ten suites and six bedrooms in Hartwell Court, the adjacent 18th century former indoor riding school.
The Old Rectory Hartwell has a superbly appointed master four poster suite with a sitting room and three other bedrooms with bathrooms.

The impressive Grade I listed house, which has both Jacobean and Georgian facades, contains most beautiful rooms with rococo ceilings, antique furniture and paintings, yet with every imaginable contemporary comfort. This is my quick walk around the house after having my 5 O’Clock British Tea.
The large and historic drawing rooms at Hartwell House, with fine plasterwork and open fires, provide the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea. Known to be the best Tea and Cake in the South East. Fine dining, awarded 3 AA Rosettes, Hartwell House offers a range of unique dishes to suit every taste, combining the very best of local produces and seasonal offerings.  Every course is prepared to perfection under the watchful eye of our Head Chef, Daniel Richardson. But before moving to the restaurant, you will be received with a complimentary glass of champagne, next to the fire place at the drawing rooms, where you will be presented with the Menus.
Finally, if you are looking for the perfect venue for a romantic getaway or for a Civil Union or Wedding, Hartwell House would be a perfect option to be consider.

Hotels like this get me almost to the verge of tears. I get moved by their history, level of service and old school service and traditions. Make me realize how much I love what I do, and how privilege I am, being able to experience this things. Experience the excellence in British style and service, be transported and elated. And once again, if you cannot afford a night at Hartwell House, then at least come for Afternoon Tea. It is a great gateway from London and it won’t cost you more than 60 pounds per person, for a full day of British style and class. The Spa…. well yes not the best feature of the manor, and I would not base my visit around it. Relax and enjoyment at Hartwell House for me was to experience the main house in full and walk around their gardens. CM

How to get to Hartwell House from London, simple… their are direct trains every 2o minutes approx. from London Marylebon Railway Station to Aylesbury (55 minutes / £13 each way). From Aylesbury Station, take a taxi to the house (10 minutes / £5).
