La Dolce Vita in Sorrento at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria
| Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Italy | After my brief and willful layover in Milan, I flew into Naples and in less than one hour my private transfer – organized by the hotel – wisked me into heaven in Sorrento at – what I would like to refer as the Grande Dame hotel of the Amalfi Coast – the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. This was my first time visit to the Amalfi Coast, and I was lucky enough to have a wonderful three nights stay, ahead of me, and I surely enjoyed every single moment of it. Hope you enjoy my post on this experience. Since I arrived by night, I was not able to fully comprehend the beauty of the setting, and panoramic views of the Bay of Naples awaiting for me, framed by the spectacular omnipresence of the Mount Vesuvius. As I arrived to the hotel- approx. by 9PM – I quickly Checked IN and taken to my room.

It had been a long – enjoyable day transiting from New York to Milan and onwards to my final destination, the Amalfi Coast, so I was craving for a nice glass of crispy white wine and for a nice meal. Right away, my host extended an invitation  to join my fellow travel colleagues for dinner at the terraces of the hotel, for a magical evening over a 3-course dinning experience at the Terraces of  BOSQUET Seafront Restaurant. So I quickly got into a proper attaire and prance slong the stunning quiet corridors, down the stairs and through the terraces, to meet my crew. Of course my menu included great local wines, cheese, pasta, fish and dolce. Couldn’t be happier.

The power of traveling, and experiencing by yourself… I wouldn’t in a million years, recommended anyone to stay in Sorrento. I had this wierd feeling about it, but after my visit and stay, I am confident that the combination of Sorrento and Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, is the perfect base for your Amalfi Coast experience.

The following morning I woke up very early. I was dying to go to the gym, and then off to breakfast. I must admit my relationship with my room, wasn’t what I would call – love at first sight – specialy after my stay at the Milano Suite at the Mandarin Oriental Milan. It was rather small, with a traditional old style bathroom. But as I woke up the following morning, and I opened the curtains and the doors to my private balcony, and let the sun light and the breeeze of the Sorrentine Peninsula embrace me, I understood everything, and I deeply fall in love. I was so happy to be there, and appreciated the the room, its traditional style, design and size. I was yet again elated. I was off to leave three days of La Dolce Vita in Sorrento.

I mean, judge by the photos, the views from my room where just breathtaking, featuring the entire Bay of Sorrento, plus Mount Vesuvius right infront of me, and Capri in the far back. I was then ready to officially begin my Sorrento experience. Picked my outfit for the day, and off I went to breakfast. And wait till you see the breakfast room, with a pianist performing live every morning and the spectacular views over the Sorrentine Peninsula, where my table felt like floating over the bay.

I was there early May, and the weather was perfection. Not crowded at all – I would never visit Amalfi Coast myself during July and August – since it is literally MADNESS. After a lovely breakfast, it was just a gorgeous day, I decided to go for a stroll along the premises, outdoor pool and gardens of the property.

And after that, the hotel arranged a one hour walking tour of Sorrento for us. Which was lovely, including the Valley of the Mills, Piazza Tasso, Museum Correale, Cathedral of Sorrento and Via San Cesareo – main shopping street. Sorrento is well known for the inlaid wood and the Limoncello. The lemons are HUGE as big as your head, super tasteful and the aroma is incredible.

From Sorrento we were able to easily visit the ruins of Pompeii and also most of the towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano, Amalfi, Atrani, Ravello, Minori and Maiori, and very conveniently the island of Capri. And I stress conveniently, because the private yachts snd ferrys, dock and depart right from the base doorsteps of the hotel, with a private elevator and passage that takes you directly there. But this is for other posts… Stay tuned.

The day was starting to fade away, so I decided to enjoy a cup of tea, and head back to my room to witness a gorgeous sunset over the Bay of Naples from my private balcony, before getting ready for our evening out in Sorrento.

The evening began over Dirty Vodka Martinis at the lovely bar of the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. Such and old school fabulous way to kick off the night out in town.

And off we went for a short walk to our next gourmet deatination in town, Il Buco Ristorante. And excellent dinning experience, in a private elegant and colorful setting, hosted by the charismatic Chef Pepe Aversa, himself. This Michelin starred restaurant is housed in the wine cellas of an old monastery in the centre of Sorrento.

Back at the hotel, ready for bed. The following day included a full day exploring Capri and Anacapri. Conveniently located at the lower level of the hotel, is Marina Piccola, from where you take the hydrofoils or jetboats to Capri, Ischia, Naples among other destinations in the Amalfi Coast. The hotel offers a private access.

It was my last night in Sorrento. next day I was moving to Ravello, for yet another memorable stay at the Belmond Hotel Caruso. Tiziana, the Hotel Manager, hosted us for dinner at Michelin starred restaurant Bosquet, this time indoors. Such a lovely room and farewell dinner, which was closed, with a marvelous surprise…. Fireworks ocer the Bay of Naples, lighting up the entire Marina Piccola. Such a perfect way to end my Dolce Vita experience in Sorrento at Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria.
